Choose a Monitor Arm by the Desk and Screen Mount
Check mounting interface, weight and clamp conditions before choosing extra reach.
We have not performed hands-on testing of the products discussed. Manufacturer references and official guidance support the documented information below; comparison exercises are our editorial guidance.
A monitor arm joins two important objects: the display and the desk. Both must support the exact arrangement. A matching-looking screw pattern or a thin clamp does not establish that the installation is suitable. Begin with the monitor and desk documentation, then compare movement and cable access rather than selecting maximum reach.
Identify the exact monitor mounting
Record the monitor model, its documented mounting interface and the relevant mass under the arm maker's instructions. Check whether the stand is removed and what components remain. A screen diagonal is not a substitute for weight or mounting data. Leitz's official monitor-arm catalog identifies several formats, but every selected arm's load and attachment conditions need independent checking for the actual display.
Read the desk attachment requirements
Find the desk's permitted attachment and loading information and compare it with the arm's clamp or grommet instructions. Thickness alone cannot establish suitability for an unfamiliar hollow, fragile or reinforced surface. Measure access below the tabletop too: an apron, drawer or crossbar may prevent the clamp from reaching its documented position. Resolve uncertain materials or installation through the makers or appropriate advice before buying. Do not add improvised plates or drill a desk to force a product match based on a general shopping article.
Model the supported movement
Mark the desired screen positions and compare them with the arm's documented range. Include surrounding walls, shelves and the space needed for ordinary access. Check cable guidance through the permitted movement so a tidy static route does not become taut. OSHA's workstation guidance considers monitor and input placement together; an arm should not be described as a medical solution or universal ergonomic improvement on its own.
Compare with the supplied stand
The monitor's existing appropriate stand may already provide the needed height and position. A new arm is useful when a documented movement or surface-space task remains. Check assembly, adjustment and return conditions, especially if mounting leaves marks. If buying, verify delivered parts and model, retain monitor and desk compatibility records and follow the exact installation procedure. Skip a multi-arm bundle for a hypothetical second screen when only one documented mounting task is currently required.
Compare the trade-offs
| Option or check | Reason to choose | Reason to reconsider |
|---|---|---|
| Clamp arm | Desk and arm instructions support the exact surface | Thickness alone is incomplete evidence. |
| Grommet mount | A permitted compatible installation exists | Drilling or structural changes need separate resolution. |
| Existing monitor stand | Already provides the needed position | An arm may add installation without benefit. |
