Choose a Keyboard Tray From the Underside of the Desk
Check mounting, movement and input space before freeing the desktop.
We have not performed hands-on testing of the products discussed. Manufacturer references and official guidance support the documented information below; comparison exercises are our editorial guidance.
A keyboard tray changes the underside of a desk as well as the work surface. The drawer, apron, leg space and mounting material all matter. Begin with the exact desk and input devices, then compare the tray's supported installation rather than assuming that moving the keyboard below the top is always an improvement.
Map the underside first
Measure the usable underside and identify aprons, crossbars, drawers and cable channels. Read the desk maker's permitted attachment guidance before choosing a clamp or screw-mounted product. Thickness alone does not establish that a surface can accept an unfamiliar fitting. Fellowes' official Office Suites Keyboard Tray page identifies a real product example, while its support resources provide the route to exact installation information. Do not drill or add improvised supports based on a general shopping article.
Measure the complete input area
Record the keyboard, pointer movement area and any required pad or control. Compare usable tray dimensions, not only its overall width. A separate mouse platform may change the total footprint and support conditions. Include cable exits and access to charging or receivers. The tray must serve the real task without forcing equipment against its edges or requiring an unsupported extension.
Check movement and leg clearance
Read the documented adjustment range, sliding path and locking process. Model the movement with paper dimensions while keeping furniture and valuable equipment in their proper positions. Include the chair and ordinary route away from the desk. A tray that fits while parked may obstruct access when extended. This guide does not prescribe a personal ergonomic arrangement; the whole workstation and any specialist needs should be evaluated through suitable guidance.
Compare rearrangement and maintenance
A different desktop layout or an existing suitable desk adjustment may solve the issue without installation. A tray earns its place when the documented mounting and input position work for the actual setup. Read cleaning, service and return conditions, especially where mounting changes furniture. If buying, verify delivered hardware and model, retain installation instructions and do not add a heavy extra device beyond the stated load. Skip the purchase if the underside or required input footprint remains unresolved.
Compare the trade-offs
| Option or check | Reason to choose | Reason to reconsider |
|---|---|---|
| Clamp-mounted tray | Exact desk surface and clearance are supported | A drawer or apron can block installation. |
| Screw-mounted tray | Permitted material and installation are resolved | Furniture changes affect returns and future moves. |
| Desktop rearrangement | Existing surface can serve the input task | Another moving component may be unnecessary. |
